Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,
As we did our Back to School blessing on Sunday it was great to see all of our children ready for another school year, and young adults leaving for college. So many hopes & dreams, so much promise for tomorrow. I am very proud of them. When Archbishop Carlson first came to St. Louis he was very excited about our Catholic school system. It is after all, the largest school system in Missouri, and something to be proud of. However, it is not without its challenges, especially the financial one. When the archbishop asked for solutions he was told that the best hope for success was to fill the empty desks, and this has become his goal. When I was the pastor of Central Catholic I was constantly amazed at the sacrifices made by some of the parents so that their children could attend a Catholic school. And I probably don't have to tell you just how big a sacrifice it takes to sit in one of those desks.
You may have heard mention of the latest capital campaign, "Beyond Sunday." Its main purpose is to establish an endowment from which will come scholarships. It is hoped that these scholarships will fill those empty desks making our schools more financially viable, and allowing every child in St. Louis that wants a Catholic education to have one. It is a lofty goal. While I am sure many of you are saying, "Oh no, not another capital campaign!" I ask that you give this some thought and that you pray over it. After all, it is for our children and their future.
P.S. Oh yeah, another reason to consider giving to this campaign is that 40% of what you give will come back to our parish, but you will hear more about that in the coming weeks.
