At St. Alphonsus "The Rock," we are blessed to be able to sing and pray to the Lord frequently in our authentically Black and truly Catholic tradition, whether we gather together in communal worship or spend time in individual prayer and devotion. The opportunities to gather are many, and we are grateful for our beautiful Gothic Revival worship space with its magnificent stained glass windows from the 1904 World's Fair and one of only four surviving pipe organs of its kind in the country.

We have opportunities to pray daily, weekly and at special times throughout the year – joined by our dynamic Gospel choir, we offer worship and praise to our Triune God, giving thanks always. As a Redemptorist parish serving "the most abandoned," we especially cherish our historic weekly Our Mother of Perpetual Help devotion – the first novena of its kind in the United States, begun here in 1922 and now prayed worldwide.

Come worship with us at The Rock, where people don't just go to Mass – they come to worship!

ABOUT US

The Rock's African-American identity has deep historical roots dating to its earliest days. It is believed that In 1887, Venerable Augustus Tolton, the first African-American Catholic priest in America, visited St. Alphonsus and offered Mass. This connection to pioneering Black Catholic leadership established the church as an important site in African-American Catholic history.
